The Me-Time Tag

I have found another one of these Tag posts and I really enjoy doing them as it helps my lovely followers to learn more about me and I also love reading them on others’ blogs. Me-time is really important to me, as I have spent so much time on my own most of my life, being an only-child and losing my Mum at 17. Therefore I am used to having my own space and now living with my boyfriend James, I like to make sure I have a little me-time so that I don’t have a freak-out every now and then haha!

  1. What do you like to watch or read during me-time?

With regards to films, I love girly films like The Princess Diaries, Cinderella, Clueless and then the Eighties Tom Cruise film Cocktail. Basically just films that remind me of when I was younger, they always seem to cheer me up. Book-wise I do read quite a lot anyway, and so it is usually just whichever book I am currently reading, it tends to be chick lit.

  1. What do you wear during me-time?
Pyjamas all the way! If I am feeling cold, it will be pyjamas, slippers, and a cardigan or hoody, all topped off with a blanket or throw which I then tend to drag along with me to the kitchen in search of snacks.
  2. What are your favourite me-time beauty products?
I run myself a lovely hot bath, pop a bath bomb or melt in there, tie my hair back and just soak until the water runs cold, although I then do fill it up with more hot water – just don’t tell my boyfriend James that haha! (He says I have too many baths/use too much water as it is!) I tend to take more care with my skin during me-time and so I will get my Magnitone out, and give me skin a good scrub, and use my Soap & Glory No Clogs Allowed face mask, which is really warming on the skin.
  3. Current favourite nail polish?

Hmmmmmm I don’t paint my nails have as much as I would love to, and at the moment I like pastel colours, even though it is winter now! But I do have a lovely mustard-coloured Barry M Gelly nail polish.

  1. What do you eat or drink during me-time?

Anything I can find! I do like to whip myself up a hot chocolate, with squirty cream and marshmallows though and I will probably eat more sweet things than savoury during me-time as it is often when I am surfing the crimson wave.

  1. Current favourite candle?

I got a Stoneglow Winter candle from Love Aroma and it smells soooo amazing. It is such a Christmassy scent and it looks pretty too as it has the appearance of snow, with lots of sparkly glitter on the top.

  1. Do you ever have outdoor me-time?

Basically NO hahaha. Certainly not in Winter anyway, I hate the cold weather!

  1. Would you ever go and watch a film alone?

No, films don’t bother me that much anyway, and we do watch quite a lot of films at home as James is a bit of a film buff! I think the cinema is so expensive nowadays and so if I was to go it would be as a trip out with James or a friend.

  1. Favourite online shop?
At the moment I love browsing www.boots.com as there are so many great offers at this time of the year and I cannot wait until this weekend as there will be lots of Black Friday offers – bank card at the ready! I am hoping to get the Jack Wills duffel bag set and the Best of Benefit set in particular.
  2. Anything to add? What else do you do during me-time?

I love a little snooze, my Dad used to call my horizontal Annie as I just tend to relax a lot of the time, well as much as possible. I will catch up on Twitter and Facebook, play my mindless games on my iPhone, flick through magazines and have cuddles with my kitten Millie.

Hope you’ve enjoyed my answers! If you want to also do the tag just copy & paste the questions below to your own blog.

Christmas Tag Post

1. What is your favourite Christmas Movie/s?

I love Miracle on 34th Street and the Home Alone films, as well as Eloise at Christmastime. Generally just really traditional Christmas movies.

2. Do you open your presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?

Definitely Christmas morning. I tend to open my sack first which is usually stocking fillers. It is a pillow case which my Aunty made me when I was little and it says, ‘Dear Santa, Kathryn has been a very good girl this year”. Haha Obviously!

3. Do you have a favourite Christmas memory?

As some of you may know, or not know, my Mum died when I was 17 and so all of my childhood Christmases were really good as they remind me of my Mum. Although one year I really wanted an electronic typewriter and my Mum said they couldn’t afford one, but when I woke up on Christmas Day there was one under the tree.

4. Favourite festive food?

Definitely roast potatoes in duck fat! Although I love Christmas breakfast, a good English fry up, with champagne and fresh orange to drink. We always have a gammon joint on Boxing Day which is one of my favourites too.

5. Favourite Christmas gift?

Probably the typewriter! Although one year I had told my Mum that I wanted a few little bits and she bought me literally the tiniest teddy bear ornament I had ever seen, the size of my fingernail. So that was cute. Also, my Goddaughter’s Mum, Nickie always gets me really thoughtful presents, personalised gifts from the kids, which I love.

6. Favourite Christmas scent?

Cinnamon! I love the really strong Christmassy festive scents. Not a clue what they’re actually called but most people find them a bit pongy.

7. Do you have any Christmas Eve traditions?

Until this year, I have always spent Christmas with my Mum’s family, as Dad goes to his partner Jan’s family’s for the day. This year however, as I am living with my boyfriend James, I am not sure what we will have planned. I normally like to go out for lunch, or a bit of shopping or a Christmas film/cinema trip.

8. What tops your tree?

Again, with me now living with James, I will be making new traditions. Our tree is going to have a silver rattan glittery star on the top of it this year.

9. As a kid what was the one (crazy, wild, extravagant) gift you always asked for but never received?

I don’t think I have ever asked for anything extravagant, although my Dad would probably disagree haha! I used to always want like half of the Argos catalogue as a kid though!

10. What’s the best part about Christmas for you?

To be totally honest, I actually really dislike Christmas day since my Mum died, but I really enjoy the build up to Christmas, people tend to be more sociable, and happier. I love that people you haven’t heard from in a while will send a card or ask to meet up. I love the traditional, simple things about Christmas.

Gucci Beauty

I have never been so excited for a beauty launch in my whole entire life when I heard that Gucci were bringing out their very own cosmetics line. I have loved Gucci since I was 18 years old and walked into Harrods and purchased my first ever bag. It was a little black one, that couldn’t really fit a whole lot in, but I still have it to this day. There’s something about Gucci’s timeless style that makes each piece an investment, as unlike some designer brands, their styles never go out of date.

photo-226

As soon as the email came into my inbox from Gucci announcing their beauty line release, I was straight onto their website to take a browse through the stunning lipsticks, glosses, eyeshadows, mascaras and much more. The prices are really quite extortionate for make-up and so I couldn’t go crazy, but this is Gucci and it was a one-off treat.

photo-225

I chose the Sheer Blushing Powder (£37) in Spring Rose, which softly illuminates and awakens the skin for a gorgeous radiant shine, but this won’t be delivered until the middle/end of the month and so I shall tell you about the products I have received.

The Vibrant Demi-Glaze Lip Lacquer (£25) in Unapologetic Pink is a really natural pinky hue and is packed with pigment and super glossy but has a rich, creamy consistency.

photo-221

The Audacious Color-Intense Lipstick (£28) in Whisper, is also a natural toned lip product, which feels really light on the lips but lasts throughout the day (unless you are lucky enough to have it kissed off). I went for a natural coloured lipstick and gloss because, with buying online I wasn’t sure whether some of the more fashionable colours would suit me or not.

photo-224

I also ordered the Precise Sculpting Brow Pencil (£21) in Brunette, and the colour matches my eyebrows really well and so I was super impressed with this. I used to always use brow powders but recently I have discovered some really good, natural eyebrow pencils that don’t give that ‘drawn on’ effect.

photo-222

Next item in my bag of goodies is the Opulent Volume Mascara (£27) in Black. I love mascaras and they are definitely my desert-island product, and so I thought this would be a perfect product to try. The brush is more acrylic than bristles but so far so good.

photo-223

Last but not least I ordered the Magnetic Color Shadow Mono (£27) in Antique Gold. The range of eyeshadow colours is immense but I chose this as I thought it would be great for the upcoming festive season and all of the parties that comes along with it. It is a little less gold than I was hoping for in real life, but so well pigmented.

photo-220

Now I cannot even begin to tell you how much I love the packaging – they look and feel so luxurious and as sad as this sounds, they really feel like you have something special in your hands. The tiny monograms are so so so cute and the black and gold finishes are perfect. Obviously at the prices they are, I won’t be purchasing the range on a regular basis but they will make fabulous Birthday and Christmas presents.

What do you think of this range? Pricey? Exquisite? Both or Neither?

Love,

Save The Blow Dry

Whilst we are on the subject of hair, let us introduce to you Save The Blow Dry. I must admit shower caps have never really been my thing, they are often tight and my hair ends up slipping out of the cap as it is quite long. Plus, the ones I have used have often turned my hair into a frizzy nightmare within 30 minutes of relaxing bathing.

 Image

Save The Blow Dry have created this amazing new shower cap. It has two layers, the outer layer has a gorgeous waterproof design with pictures of different hair tools, whilst the inner layer is made from super-absorbent micro weave towelling which helps humidity and condensation from building up inside the shower cap. The Save The Blow Dry shower cap also has a dual usage, by turning the cap inside out, it can be used to help aid your favourite hair mask or treatment.

 Image

I have been using the Save The Blow Dry shower cap for a few weeks now and I am truly impressed, I use it for shower and bath times when my hair doesn’t need washing. I also use it to keep my hair away from my face when I am removing my make up as I often end up with bits of moisturiser and face scrub in my hair which is a total pain in the bottom. It is definitely a quality product and I imagine it will last me years and as it is so roomy and comfortable I can fit all of my hair in without it falling into my face. Perfect!

New York Globee

I love having candles and pretty lights in my bedroom and this night light is no exception. I was lucky enough to go to New York for my 21st birthday with my family and friends and was even luckier to stay at The Plaza, which is the hotel which features in Home  Alone 2. We saw so many different sights, including Ground Zero, Times Square, the Empire State Building and of course Macy’s.

Image

The Globee range is a miniature globe which lights up using three AA batteries and features different cities and countries from all around the world. It is a great learning tool for children wanting to know more about a particular city or country or simply as a reminder of a trip away.

Image

The Globee comes with a miniature booklet which lists and gives information on all of the sights and places featured on the Globee. I thought this was such a great idea as you can learn more about each attraction or historical landmark and it even features a quiz at the back of the booklet.

Image

The maps and pictures are beautifully illustrated with some fun, quirky parts to it and the range also includes umbrellas, money boxes, books and luggage tags and the New York Globee is just £9.99. You can see the full range at www.globee.co.uk

Nakd Fruit & Nut Bits

Recently we have had a few guest posts, including a couple from our friend and colleague Alyson Shipp, who also got her Dad, Tony involved….

As a keen walker, cyclist, runner and general lover of ‘the great outdoors’ I am always looking for a variety of healthy snacks to help me refuel when on the move. The general criteria I look for being something tasty, nutritious, healthy, plus easy to chew & digest. I was therefore pleasantly surprised when handed three packs of Nakd Fruit & Nut Bits to sample.

Image

Nakd is a new brand to me and one I have not come across in the usual outlets – supermarkets, health food stores and outdoor shops etc. Manufactured in Great Britain by Natural Balance Foods, a relatively young company producing a variety of wholefoods which include the Nakd brand snacks and Trek protein bars plus several flapjack products.

So let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. Is the product any good and would I buy it? Well more of that later. I was lucky enough to be handed three different varieties of Nakd Fruit & Nut Bits, namely Cocoa Orange, Berry delight and Cocoa Delight. The cellophane pack is quite attractive with plenty of information regarding the product and comes in a handy size at 130g weight. Information described on the front of the pack states ‘1 of 5 a day, no added Sugar, wheat, dairy & gluten free’ and ‘Simply Yummy’. Images on back of the pack suggest the bits can be nibbled, shared or sprinkled onto cereals.

On ripping open the first pack, Cocoa Orange, the pleasant aroma immediately wafted upwards, reminding me of the smells from the old Terry’s chocolate factory at York. The bits are quite chunky being about 20mm square and have a soft and chewy texture. The cocoa is very evident but not too overpowering and the orange flavour still comes through. Upon checking the ingredients list, which is surprisingly short, they are:

Dates 40%

Cashews 40%

Raisins 14%

Cocoa 5%

Rice flour and a hint of orange flavouring.

No glutamates or ‘E’ numbers to worry about then!

Next I tried the Cocoa Delight variety, containing a higher percent of dates and cocoa, but less of the cashew nuts. This was quite pleasant but maybe a little bland compared to the other two flavours.

Finally it was the turn of Berry Delight, this being my favourite of the three varieties. Whilst only having a 3% content of raspberries, the taste and natural sweetness of the fruit made this a very pleasant chew. I can well imagine a few of these chunks thrown into a bowl of morning porridge would make for a pleasant and healthy breakfast, with a different slant to the usual addition of golden syrup.

Image

Overall I consider these Nakd Fruit & Nut Bits to be of very high quality, made with natural ingredients. The energy content makes them very suitable for a between meals boost when working hard or during extended periods of exercise. The cocoa content is very evident in the taste so if you are not a chocolate fan then perhaps you should look for an alternative. The manufacturers’ web page http://www.naturalbalancefoods.co.uk/ contains plenty of useful information about its products which also include several other types of energy / protein bars, flapjacks and packs of fruit etc. All the products are said to be available in the leading supermarkets and health food shops or can be ordered online in packs from the manufacturer.  The Nakd Fruit & Nut Bits (also available as bars) are supplied at a cost of £18.95 for a box of 8 bags including postage. This makes the product a little pricey in my book @ £2.37 per bag, however if you can find them in the local supermarket I am sure they would be a little cheaper.

Image

So there you have it, a ‘Simply Yummy’ addition to the many health products out there on the supermarket shelves, but one I will certainly be buying, for throwing into my rucksack for the weekend jaunt.

Spring Has Sprung…(Apparently)

Image

This year seems to be zooming past! We hope you all had a good Easter and the Easter bunny was kind to you! We have been missing in action for the past couple of months and we appreciate your patience with us. A lot has happened….I (Kathryn) was in Florida on holiday for 11 days, I then lost my job at the Press Association and so was spending my time looking for a new job, I was lucky enough to get one at a company called Croda and so I have been busy starting here and getting back in to a routine, I also now have a boyfriend and he lives 90 miles away from me and so my weekends are often spent visiting him. Emily has been practising like mad for her driving test as well as having a very busy workload and catching up with her friends and family, taking part in a journalism course but we are now back, and once we have sorted through things we will be adding items again much more regularly than that of recent months. We have plenty of new and exciting products for you to read about so keep your eyes peeled.

Lots of Love

Kathryn & Emily xxx
