As the new year begins, everyone has two problems:
1) Present purchases, Christmas and New Year celebrations have completely cleared out your bank account. Like completely. You’re completely skint and raiding the piggy bank to buy yourself a Freddo to make life seem better (which by the way, used to be 10p. What happened to the world?!)
2) EVERYONE is on a health kick- including me! The gym is rammed every time you go, the exercise classes have so many people in you’re surprised you haven’t gained a black eye from someone getting slightly TOO into the new Zumba routine and you open the fridge and sigh with disappointment when you prepare what feels like your 1526th salad of the month. Not only that, but everyone seems to have become Dryathletes, and, although the idea of raising money for charity by taking part in Dry January is brilliant, no one wants to play out anymore!
I even bought some new trainers last week! (I know, sexy right?)
And for those who know me well, I’m never one to turn down a night out with the girls!
So, in light of this, I’ve decided to do a night out feature of all the products I love for your perfect party night. Because, you know, it’s good to be optimistic of all the nights out February is going to bring! I have my friend Stacey’s birthday night out on the 1st, then I’m heading up to Newcastle for my friends Laura and LC’s birthdays, then of course, it’s Kathryn’s 30th weekends in Butlins to prepare for!
Oh and be prepared, this may be pretty long! Perfection takes time, right?
I always love to have a bath if I have a while to get ready, as it leaves your skin feeling soft and ready for prep! It also leaves you feeling relaxed and ready for a late one.
I love quite a lot of different music, so usually let my phone or iPad play on shuffle whilst in the bath. Obviously, a favourite is still One Direction’s album Midnight Memories, but to get ready for a night out I love listening to dance and house music which have been holiday songs from the summer that remind you of having a great time!
I also like to burn some candles whilst in the bath, and as you can see, I’ve got a cute selection going on at the minute:
I love the Faith In Nature bubble baths which I blogged about a couple of days ago. They have the most amazing scents and leave my skin feeling lovely and soft! My favourite for before a night out is the Grapefruit and Orange, which is really zingy and refreshing!
To wash my hair, it depends on what products I’m using at the time. I have dyed hair which I use a lot of heat on, so I don’t like to wash it every day to avoid further damage. I love Herbal Essences shampoos, as each scent reminds me of certain times in my life, but at the minute I’m using Paul Mitchell products which are expensive, but leave my hair feeling gorgeous!
Next, to get the perfect skin for fake tan, I exfoliate using one of my two favourite Soap and Glory exfoliators; Scrub Of Your Life and Flake Away. Both of these products smell divine and leave my skin feeling utterly gorgeous and smooth!
Another ‘in shower’ product which I really like at the moment is Nivea In Shower Moisturiser. You’ve probably read quite a lot a out this product before, but it is the lazy girls solution to moisturising and I often use it in a morning when the whole moisturising routine flew out of the window when you hit the snooze button for the 17th time. It’s really cheap but effective and I use it all the time, even when I AM planning to moisturise properly!
First up, I cleanse my face properly just to ensure its completely prepped for make up!
I’m using two different cleansers at the moment, one from a brand called Amie and one called Organic Surge which came in a Betrousse Box that we were sent.
Each have different consistencies, with Amie being creamier and Organic Surge being more watery, but both leave my face feeling squeaky clean and ready for moisturiser!
To moisturise my face, I like to use a different cream than the rest of my body, as the skin is much more sensitive and libel to damage.
Another product received in the Betrousse Beauty Box was a Helenere 24 hour cream, which is in a minute size that is easy to carry around or take on your travels. The consistency of this product is brilliant and a little bit goes a long way, so it lasts for ages!
Even after using the Nivea product in the shower, if I’m going to fake tan then moisturiser is a must! At the minute I really love more Soap and Glory products- particularly the Righteous Butter, which again smells gorgeous and leave my skin feeling brand new. I also like to use it when I’m still slightly damp as it locks on the moisture of your skin!
For a real pamper session, hair removal is also vital, not only to your body but to your eyebrows.
I’ve been using a product which I was slightly dubious about but it’s a really quick and easy way to get perfect brows and that’s the Nair Face and Eyebrow Wax Roll On.
I thought I’d end up with odd shaped eyebrows, but this is great to get rid of all the unwanted strays and a lot easier than tweezing, which I am rubbish at. The roll on applicator glides smoothly on the skin after it has been sat in boiled water for a couple of minutes. Obviously, waxing is pretty painful but this one wasn’t too bad at all (and my pain threshold is horrendous) and it doesn’t leave unsightly red marks which is extremely handy! Just ensure you do a patch test first!
Now for tanning. I love a variety of different tanning products and use different brands for different occasions. At the moment I love the St Tropez Instant Tan which was featured on The Kats Paws last week, and am also loving another well known brand- Fake Bake.
This tan is more of an instant body glow than a full on fake tan, and is perfect for this time of the year where you want exactly that- just a slight glow.
The pigmentation is gorgeous and shimmery, and the consistency is thin and body lotion like, making it extremely easy to apply.
I still use a mitt for this, just to get a more professional and even finish, and it washes off easily the next day.
I’m not a huge fan of putting loads of products on my hair as it weighs down easily, so finding the right balance is needed for volume and long lasting style.
Firstly, I’m still absolutely in love with my Neal and Wolf Silk balm. I have honestly never used a product like this before, which works miracles on my unruly mane. I couldn’t live without it, as you can see from our blog post a couple of months ago now!
And secondly, after styling I’ve discovered a brilliant spray for added volume, courtesy of my Boots Advent Calendar.
The Umberto Gianni Glam Hair Backcomb in a Bottle has been in my handbag ever since I opened the little card door, as it’s such an easy product to use when your hair is looking flat. You also don’t need to damage your hair backcombing- this does the job for you!
I can never decide what colour nails I want until I’ve decided on an outfit, so what I choose always depends on that. Therefore I’m going to give a few examples of products I’ve used recently.
If it’s a big night out, I often like to use false nails as I have the horrible habit of biting mine.
A quick and easy solution are the Elegant Touch range, as they are so easy to apply with adhesive tabs rather than glue. You can literally press them on and go. Over Christmas I LOVED these Glitter nails in Tickled Pink, as the sparkle made them festive whilst the dusky pink kept them girly.
These ones are in the length Short, which I found to last longer as you’re less likely to catch them and knock them off like some of the longer fake nails you can buy.
These would look great with a little black dress to inject a bit of colour!
Another, slightly wackier Elegant Touch product are these Polka-Dot It nails from the House Of Holland range. I love these are they’re something completely different to what I would usually wear, and add texture as well as monochrome colour to your nails.
Again, these are easy to apply but slightly more fiddly as you have to use Nail Glue. I do however feel that nail glued falsies last a lot longer than those with adhesive tabs, so you don’t have to worry about losing one half way through the night!
If you just want to stick with painting your nails, my favourite brand is Nails Inc. The nail varnishes are so easy to apply and have no gloopiness about them, so look a lot neater than many other brands. A favourite of mine at the moment is Portobello, which is a neon coral shade that injects that little touch of summer into an outfit. Kat bought me this shade for Christmas and it will be a firm fave for a long time to come!
To quickly mop up any mistakes, I also love the new Bourjois magic nail polish remover, which is a little pot that you dip your finger in, turn a couple of times and Voila it’s like nail varnish was never even applied!
I got mine just before Christmas when Boota had a Bourjois offer on, so also got a lipstick which I haven’t stopped wearing and a little round pot blusher, which is a classic product that is always reliable!
And finally… MAKE UP
I’m not going to go into too much make-up related reviewing, as I’ve featured a lot of my favourite products on our Twitter and blog posts recently, but here are a few pictures and I’ll make a list of my go to products to wear for a night out underneath!

Now, to choose your tipple of choice and party the night away!
I personally like a glass of Pinot Grigio or a vodka, lemonade and lime, but we were recently sent a whiskey sample from Drambuie, which our friend and colleague Josh Oldridge tried out for us!
“Usually when drinking whisky I have to mentally prepare for each sip and my jaw tenses as I gulp. But this is a game changer.
It’s strong but very smooth. It has a sweet scent but the taste is not overbearing. The touch of honey levels the bitterness which, as well as saving my jaw from locking, creates an intruiging tang with further hints of aniseed and even perhaps orange. Smooth and very drinkable, a lovely tipple.”
A quick spritz of your favourite perfume (mines Marc Jacobs Daisy, which will be featured in our Fragrance Direct haul very soon!) and you’re ready to go!
Happy partying everyone, and have a drink for me!
Love, Emily xxx
